25 septembre 1988-25 septembre 2020, il y a 32 ans El Hadji Amadou Dia Bâ offrait au Sénégal sa première médaille olympique au stade olympique de Séoul (Corée du Sud) en se classant deuxième avec un chrono de 47 s 23 derrière André Philips 47 s 18 et devant le grand favori Edwin Moses 47 s 56.
Pris en main par Jean GOMIS d’abord avant l’excellent Fernand Hurtebis, Amadou Dia Bâ qui a démarré par le demi-fond ensuite la hauteur avant de se voir orienter aux obstacles allait réaliser des progrès rapides sur cette épreuve du 400 m haies. Sa seconde place à la finale du 400 m haies hommes des jeux olympiques de Séoul ce 25 septembre 1988, marquait l’avènement des africains dans cette épreuve. 32 ans après les Sénégalais se souviennent toujours de cette haute performance.
Aujourd’hui il est sans doute le plus grand athlète sénégalais de tous les temps, car son palmarès s’orne de bien d’autres grands succès. Il a grandement contribué à l’essor de cette discipline au Sénégal et en Afrique.
