Le gouvernement nigérian a suspendu vendredi les activités de Twitter, deux jours après la suppression par le réseau social d’un tweet du président Muhammadu Buhari.
« Le gouvernement fédéral a suspendu, pour une durée indéterminée, les activités du service de microblogging et de réseau social Twitter au Nigeria« , indique le ministère de l’Information et de la Culture dans ce communiqué. Vendredi en fin d’après-midi, le réseau social fonctionnait toujours au Nigeria.
Le ministre nigérian a accusé Twitter d’ignorer les messages de Nnamdi Kanu, leader du groupe séparatiste illégal Indigenous People of Biafra, ou IPOB, qui, selon lui, encourage la violence.
Twitter a beau avoir ses propres règles, ce ne sont pas des règles universelles. Si M. le président, où qu’il soit dans le monde, se sent très mal et préoccupé par une situation, il est libre d’exprimer ces opinions.[…] Lorsque les gens brûlaient des postes de police et tuaient des policiers au Nigeria pendant EndSARS, pour Twitter, il s’agissait du droit de protester. Mais quand une chose similaire s’est produite au Capitole, c’est devenu une insurrection » s’est plaint Lai Mohammed, ministre de l’information et de la culture du Nigeria.
Le ministre avait également fait référence à l’appel lancé l’année dernière par le PDG de Twitter, Jack Dorsey, à donner des bitcoins pour soutenir les manifestations contre les violences policières qui secouaient le pays.
« La mission de Twitter au Nigeria après ces deux exemples est très suspecte. Quelles sont ses intentions?« , avait-il lancé aux journalistes.
Le Nigeria est la plus grande démocratie en Afrique, mais le gouvernement est très régulièrement pointé du doigt par les organisations de défense des droits humains.
En novembre 2019, le gouvernement avait mis en place des mesures plus strictes pour réguler les médias et lutter contre la désinformation sur les réseaux sociaux, lesquelles avaient été perçues par la société civile comme une restriction de la liberté d’expression
