Le groupe nigérian djihadiste Boko Haram a confirmé la mort de son leader historique, mort lors de combats avec le groupe rival Etat islamique en Afrique de l’Ouest, l’Iswap, a annoncé Bakura Modu, dit Sahaba, le nouveau chef présumé, dans une vidéo envoyée mercredi à l’AFP par des sources vérifiées.
Sahaba, important commandant de Boko Haram connu par les experts pour être basé sur le lac Tchad, demande à « Allah de bénir l’âme de Shekau », mort « en martyr » et accuse le chef de l’Iswap, « Abu Musab Al-Barnawi, cet agresseur pervers », de l’avoir tué.
Dans son message, prononcé en arabe et qui s’arrête de manière très abrupte au milieu d’une phrase sans raison apparente, celui qui se présente comme le nouveau chef de cette ancienne secte islamique transformée en mouvement djihadiste violent, appelle à se venger contre le groupe rival, qui a fait scission de Boko Haram en 2016.
La semaine dernière, l’Iswap avait annoncé la mort d’Abubakar Shekau, chef historique du groupe depuis la mort du fondateur Mohammed Yusuf en 2009, qui se serait fait exploser pendant des combats entre les deux groupes rivaux dans la forêt de Sambisa, dans le nord-est du Nigeria.
Cette annonce venait confirmer de nombreuses rumeurs donnant Shekau pour mort depuis le mois de mai.
L’Iswap, reconnu par le groupe Etat islamique, est né en 2016 d’une scission avec Boko Haram, auquel il reproche notamment des meurtres de civils musulmans.
Après être monté en puissance, il est désormais le groupe djihadiste dominant dans le nord-est du Nigeria, multipliant les attaques d’ampleur contre l’armée nigériane.
Depuis 2019, l’armée nigériane s’est retirée des villages et bases de petite importance, pour se retrancher dans des « supercamps », une stratégie critiquée car elle permet aux djihadistes de se déplacer sans entraves dans les zones rurales.
Depuis le début de la rébellion du groupe islamiste radical Boko Haram en 2009 dans le nord-est du Nigeria, le conflit a fait près de 36 000 morts et deux millions de déplacés.
