Journée mondiale de la liberté de presse- Hommage aux Journalistes en temps de COVID19

La Journée mondiale de la liberté de presse a été instaurée par l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies en décembre 1993, après la tenue du Séminaire pour le développement d’une presse africaine indépendante et pluraliste.

La Déclaration de Windhoek exigeait l’établissement, le maintien, et la promotion d’une presse pluraliste, libre et indépendante et mettait l’accent sur l’importance d’une presse libre pour le développement et la préservation de la démocratie au sein des Etats, ainsi que pour le développement économique. 

Au Sénégal les journalistes et la presse d’une manière générale subissent des violences physiques et verbales de part et d’autre. Le 15 mars dernier, une journaliste et un caméraman de Touba tv exerçant leurs fonctions, ont été roués de coups par des policiers. C’est incident n’est pas un cas isolé. A Dakar, lors de la manifestation contre la cherté de l’électricité, d’autres journalistes ont subi des traitements tout aussi brutaux. Présents en nombre près de la place de l’Indépendance, ils ont été repoussés sur plus de 1000 mètres. Ce qui a irrité certains confrères qui ont demandé aux forces de l’ordre de les laisser exercer leur travail. A cet appel, les policiers rétorquerent avec des tirs de grenades lacrymogènes. Si aucun blessé n’est à déplorer, certains caméramans ont eu leur matériel endommagé. C’est le cas du cameraman de Dakaractu qui s’est vu arraché les fils de sa caméra alors qu’il effectuait un direct. 

Selon Mr Alassane Samba Diop du groupe E-media, la journée du 03 Mai de cette année est assez particulière vu le contexte pandémique présent. Les journalistes qui suivent la situation de près sont exposés au COVID19 mais on ne leur rend pas hommage. Leur sacrifice passe inaperçu. En amérique latine,une vingtaine de journalistes ont déjà succombé à la maladie .

Dans le monde entier, le 3 mai est devenu l’occasion d’informer le public à propos des violations des droits à la liberté d’expression. C’est aussi le moment de se rappeler de ces nombreux journalistes qui risquent la mort ou la prison en transmettant les informations aux populations.

La liberté de presse est considérée comme une pierre angulaire des droits humains. Elle constitue un gage d’assurance que les autres droits seront respectés. Elle favorise la transparence et la bonne gouvernance. La liberté de la presse joue un rôle important dans l’instauration d’une justice équitable et transparente tout en servant de pont reliant la compréhension et le savoir.
