Muhammadu Buhari dit avoir entendu les inquiétudes légitimes de la population nigériane face à l’usage excessif de la force par certains membres de la police. Le chef de l’Etat a regretté que son long silence ait pu être interprété comme « une marque de faiblesse » de sa part.
Il a condamné les violences qui ont éclaté ces derniers jours dans plusieurs villes du pays. « Des vies humaines ont été perdues, des agressions sexuelles ont été commises, deux prisons majeures ont été attaquées, des détenus libérés, des pillages ont eu lieu », a énuméré Muhammadu Buhari. Il a également rappelé que l’unité de police SARS, honnie par les manifestants, a été dissoute et que des réformes ont été engagées pour répondre aux demandes de la jeunesse.
Il n’a en revanche pas dit un mot concernant la répression violente conduite ces derniers jours par les forces de sécurité contre le mouvement de contestation. Aucune excuse ni même d’allusion à l’intervention de l’armée contre les manifestants réunis pacifiquement à Lagos mardi soir. Difficile donc de penser que ce discours du chef de l’Etat parviendra à calmer l’escalade de la violence.
Ce jeudi a d’ailleurs encore été très tendu à Lagos et dans l’ensemble du pays. Des bandes en colère étaient encore présentes dans les rues de la mégalopole où des quartiers entiers ont été mis à sac. Les casseurs ont notamment attaqué la prison d’Ikoyi, en plein cœur d’un quartier riche de la ville. Les autorités ont annoncé ce soir qu’aucun détenu ne s’était évadé. Elles ont par ailleurs indiqué que des casernes de pompiers, des ambulances, des banques et 100 bus ont été incendiés ces derniers jours.
Des commissariats ont également été attaqués ce jeudi à Ibadan, où deux policiers ont été brûlés vifs, selon les informations rapportées par la presse nigériane
