Greenpeace s’insurge contre les tentatives de transformer les pays africains en poubelles de déchets plastiques

Greenpeace a réagi aux révélations de Libération concernant l’armateur Hapag-Lloyd qui a tenté d’introduire frauduleusement des déchets plastiques au Sénégal.

«Le géant allemand du transport maritime Hapag-Lloyd a été pris en flagrant délit de fraude par les douanes sénégalaises. Selon Libération, le cinquième armateur mondial tentait frauduleusement de faire entrer 25 tonnes de déchets plastiques au Sénégal. La marchandise a été saisie sur le navire Hansa Neuburg. La compagnie a accepté de faire une transaction pour 2 milliards de francs Fcfa en plus de réexporter les produits en question », rappelle Greenpeace, précisant que «cette nouvelle éclate un jour après que Greenpeace et la Bbc ont dévoilé comment le Royaume-Uni a déversé et brûlé des déchets plastiques en Turquie ».
Selon Awa Traoré, responsable de la campagne Océans de Greenpeace : «Il est décourageant de constater que les pays du Nord n’ont aucun respect pour les lois qu’ils élaborent et votent collectivement, sans parler des lois de nos pays, qui servent à protéger nos populations. Ils ne reconnaissent notre souveraineté que lorsque cela leur convient ; et lorsque ce n’est pas le cas, nous redevenons rapidement des terres en friche, qu’ils continuent d’essayer de nous transformer depuis des siècles ». D’après elle, «le programme des Nations Unies pour l’environnement a publié un rapport au début de l’année sur l’impact disproportionné de la pollution plastique sur les communautés et les pays marginalisés. Il a constaté que ces communautés connaissent des taux élevés d’injustice environnementale ». Qui plus, «l’Afrique n’est pas un dépotoir et ne peut plus être à la merci des intérêts des entreprises. Celles-ci font croire au monde entier que les emballages en plastique peuvent être durables, puis ils finissent sur nos côtes. Le gouvernement sénégalais a créé un bon précédent en imposant une amende aussi lourde. Nous espérons que d’autres gouvernements africains confrontés au même problème feront de même », a-t-elle plaidé.
