Quatre personnes originaires d’Afrique subsaharienne ont péri dimanche au large de la petite île d’El Hierro, aux Canaries. Dix-neuf migrants, dont trois dans un état grave, ont quant à eux été secourus par les sauveteurs espagnols.
Une opération de sauvetage de grande ampleur s’est déroulée dimanche 11 avril au large de la petite île d’El Hierro, à l’ouest des Canaries. En début d’après-midi, une embarcation de fortune transportant 23 migrants subsahariens a été repérée par des pêcheurs à environ 120 miles nautiques au sud d’El Hierro, indique la presse espagnole. À bord du canot se trouvaient quatre cadavres.
Les pêcheurs sont restés à proximité de l’embarcation en détresse et ont lancé aux rescapés de l’eau et des biscuits, en attendant la venue des secours.
Arrivés sur zone par hélicoptère, les sauveteurs espagnols ont hélitreuillé les 19 rescapés, dont plusieurs étaient inconscients. Les naufragés ont été accueillis à l’aéroport de Ténérife par des équipes médicales chargées des premiers soins. Tous ont été transférés vers des hôpitaux de l’île : trois dans un état grave, les autres en état de déshydratation.
Un navire de sauvetage, intervenu dimanche dans la soirée, a rapatrié lundi matin les quatre corps au port de La Restinga, à El Hierro.
Depuis le début de l’année, au moins 20 personnes sont mortes en mer en tentant de rejoindre les Canaries depuis les côtes ouest-africaines. Malgré les dangers, les arrivées continuent d’augmenter dans l’archipel espagnol avec 3 436 personnes débarquées entre le 1er janvier et le 31 mars, contre 1 582 sur la même période de 2020, selon des chiffres officiels.
