Covid-19 Aux Etats-Unis: Le Bilan Frôle Les 500 000 Décès, Un An Après L’Annonce Du Premier Mort

Un an après l’annonce, le 29 février 2020, du premier mort du Covid-19 dans le pays, le bilan devrait atteindre 500 000 décès de façon imminente, avec un décompte de 499 902 décès effectué par l’université Johns-Hopkins. « Nous n’avons rien connu de tel depuis plus de cent ans, depuis la pandémie de 1918, a déclaré dimanche l’immunologue Anthony Fauci, conseiller du président américain, Joe Biden. C’est quelque chose qui restera dans l’histoire. » Le président américain a ordonné la mise en berne des drapeaux pour marquer le demi-million de décès, a annoncé la Maison Blanche lundi soir.

Le seuil des 400 000 décès avait été dépassé en janvier à la veille de l’investiture de M. Biden, qui a fait de la lutte contre l’épidémie la priorité absolue de son début de mandat. « Cinq cent mille ! C’est près de 70 000 de plus que tous les Américains morts pendant la seconde guerre mondiale », a déploré vendredi M. Biden, soulignant toutefois l’espoir lié au rythme actuel des vaccinations : « Je crois que nous allons nous rapprocher de la normalité d’ici à la fin de cette année. »

Plus de 61 millions de personnes ont déjà reçu l’un des deux vaccins autorisés aux Etats-Unis (ceux de Pfizer-BioNTech et Moderna), dont 18 millions ont eu les deux injections requises. Avec une moyenne de 1,7 million d’injections quotidiennes, qui devrait augmenter, il s’est dit confiant dans la capacité d’atteindre 600 millions de doses (de quoi vacciner l’ensemble de la population) disponibles d’ici à la fin de juillet.
