Depuis l’élection des députés européens au suffrage universel direct en 1979, c’est la première fois qu’un président du Parlement meurt en exercice. L’émotion est grande en Italie.
Le président du Parlement européen, le social-démocrate Italien David Sassoli, est décédé dans la nuit de lundi à mardi en Italie, à l’âge de 65 ans, a indiqué son porte-parole. « David Sassoli est décédé le 11 janvier à 1h15 du matin au CRO (centre de référence d’oncologie) d’Aviano, Italie, où il était hospitalisé » depuis fin décembre, a annoncé sur Twitter Roberto Cuillo, le porte-parole de David Sassoli.
Depuis les petites heures de la nuit et ce mardi matin, les hommages affluent de toute l’Europe, pour louer les qualités humaines de David Sassoli, rapporte notre correspondant à Bruxelles, Pierre Benazet, unanimement loué pour sa gentillesse et par certains pour sa poigne à la présidence des débats de l’hémicycle européen.
