L’Ancien Président Argentin Carlos Menem Est Mort

Chef de la nation argentine de 1989 à 1999, celui que le pays surnommait « le Turc » en raison de ses origines arabes s’est éteint, ce dimanche, à l’âge de 90 ans.

Ses amis comme ses ennemis étaient d’accord sur un point : Carlos Saul Menem était imprévisible. Elu président de l’Argentine en juillet 1989, par une large majorité, sur un programme flou aux accents populistes, puis réélu de 1995 à 1999, Carlos Menem est mort dimanche 14 février, à l’âge de 90 ans, rapporte la presse argentine. Avec lui, le péronisme était revenu au pouvoir après une parenthèse de treize ans (dictature militaire de 1976 à 1983 puis gouvernement de l’Union civique radicale – UCR – avec Raul Alfonsin, entre 1983 et 1989). Caudillo venu de La Rioja (nord-ouest), l’une des provinces les plus pauvres du pays, il se réclamait du général Juan Domingo Peron, le fondateur du Parti justicialiste (péroniste).
