Dans son ouvrage « L’Afrique au cœur », l’ancien président du Sénégal, Macky Sall, revient sur l’un des épisodes les plus marquants de son magistère : les émeutes de mars 2021. Un moment qu’il décrit comme une tentative inédite de « destruction de l’État » orchestrée, selon lui, par une partie de l’opposition politique.

« Je déplore d’autant plus qu’un climat d’émeutes ait été instauré en 2021 par l’opposition alors que la violence n’avait jamais été un moyen de surmonter des différends politiques », écrit Macky Sall. Il rappelle qu’avant cette crise, les tensions politiques au Sénégal se réglaient toujours « de manière pacifique », grâce à un tempérament national « foncièrement pondéré ».

L’ancien chef de l’État décrit cependant une « irruption brutale » de la violence dans la rue, marquée par des attaques ciblées contre des symboles de la République : ministères, infrastructures publiques, Senelec, Eau, Ter, et même le chantier du Bus Rapid Transit (Brt). Il évoque également les scènes choquantes d’étudiants incendiant l’université avant de « célébrer cet autodafé ».

Face à cette situation, Macky Sall assume pleinement la fermeté de la réponse étatique. « Devant cette violence gratuite, l’État devait rester debout. Je l’ai assumé. Sinon, le Sénégal figurerait aujourd’hui parmi les pays faillis», a-t-il martelé dans son livre.

L’ancien Président va plus loin, évoquant des « ingérences étrangères massives » impliquant, selon lui, « des courants d’extrême gauche et des mouvements radicaux fréristes » cherchant à « déstabiliser le Sénégal et au-delà ». Avec le recul, il estime que ces actions s’inscrivaient dans un plan visant à « fragiliser tout l’Ouest africain ».

Tout en se réjouissant de l’alternance démocratique issue des urnes en 2024, Macky Sall conclut qu’il n’aurait pu accepter qu’un changement de pouvoir advienne « par l’anarchie et l’insurrection ».
