Un épisode guerrier effroyablement rapide, un condensé de l’horreur à Gaza, a trouvé son terme, au moins pour quelques heures, vendredi 21 mai à 2 heures du matin. Sans vainqueur, sans qu’Israël et le Hamas ne s’accordent sur le moindre terme, les deux parties ont accepté, jeudi, un cessez-le-feu dénué de préconditions. Rien ne garantit qu’il tienne dans les prochains jours. Mais selon la logique viciée qui prévaut à Gaza, ce cycle court (onze jours) a déjà traîné plus que de raison.
Jeudi soir, le cabinet de sécurité israélien a accepté les recommandations du chef d’état-major, Aviv Kochavi, et du renseignement. L’armée n’en fait pas mystère : elle a épuisé sa réserve de cibles patiemment accumulées depuis le dernier conflit, en 2014. A quoi bon poursuivre ? Pour tenter d’atteindre, à la faveur d’une erreur de leur part, l’un des leaders du Hamas, Mohammed Deif, le chef de sa branche militaire, ou Yahya Sinouar, numéro un dans le territoire ? Pour chercher une image de victoire, qui puisse convaincre la population israélienne que la sécurité du pays est restaurée, que Gaza est « contenu » ?
Israël déplore déjà 12 morts et le ministère de la santé dans l’enclave, contrôlé par le Hamas, dénombre plus de 230 victimes, pour plus de la moitié des femmes et des enfants, ainsi que 58 000 déplacés. Sauf à s’attaquer au pouvoir politique du Hamas, ou à décréter une invasion terrestre dont nul ne veut, il est temps pour l’Etat hébreu d’en finir
