Nana Akufo Addo, le président du Ghana, est le nouveau président en exercice de la CEDEAO. Il remplace Mahamadou Issoufou du Niger. Dans un tweet, le chef de l’Etat sénégalais, Macky Sall, a adressé ses vœux de succès à l’entrant et ses félicitations au président sortant.
Issoufou a présidé ce lundi, 7 septembre 2020, la cérémonie officielle d’ouverture de la 57éme session ordinaire de la Conférence des chefs d’Etat et de gouvernement de cette organisation régionale. Il s’agit du premier somment en présentiel depuis le début de la pandémie de Covid-19. La situation au Mali reste au cœur des préoccupations de l’organisation. Dans son intervention à l’ouverture de la séance, le président sortant a réitéré la sommation déjà adressé à la junte d’organiser dans les plus brefs délais la transition.
« Il est du devoir de la communauté d’assister les Maliens en vue d’un rétablissement rapide de toutes les institutions démocratiques. La junte militaire doit nous aider à aider le Mali », a-t-il affirmé. Rappelant que le Mali fait actuellement l’objet d’un blocus de la part de la CEDEAO, conformément à la charte de l’organisation afin de demander à la junte militaire de regagner les casernes et la mise en place d’une transition, d’une durée de douze mois maximum, dirigée par des civils ».
Réélu en juin 2019, pour un mandat d’un an, Issoufou s’était engagé à « accorder une grande priorité à l’unité régionale, à la consolidation des institutions démocratiques et l’intégration économique de nos Etats ».
Par contre, dans un rapport analysant à la loupe l’ensemble des pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest, le centre d’étude et de recherche, Afrikajom center, a recommandé l’organisation d’un sommet de la CEDEAO réservé à la limitation des mandats présidentiels à deux pour tous les Etats membres de la sous-région.
