19 mars, une journée de souvenir, la première alternance politique au Sénégal. Abdoulaye Wade mettait ainsi fin en 2000, aux 40 ans de règne du parti socialiste. Après 4 tentatives infructueuses Abdoulaye Wade remportait l’élection présidentielle et devenait ainsi le 3em président démocratiquement élu de la république du Sénégal avec 58,5% contre 41,5% pour Abdou Diouf. Wade arrivait au pouvoir après plusieurs années de lutte dans l’opposition. Sa campagne sous le signe et le slogan de sopi avait porté ses fruits.

Un tournant historique qui fait que le Sénégal était cité en modèle en Afrique de l’ouest en matière de démocratie et de stabilité, grâce à cette première Alternance par les urnes.
