Un bateau exploité par des passeurs, transportant une soixantaine de migrants fuyant le conflit au Yémen, a chaviré en se rendant à Djibouti dans les premières heures du 12 avril. « On ne sait pas ce qui a fait chavirer le navire », a précisé l’Oim dans un communiqué publié le jour de la tragédie.
Chaque année, des dizaines de milliers de jeunes migrants africains de la Corne de l’Afrique entreprennent de dangereux voyages depuis des pays comme la Somalie et l’Éthiopie en passant par Djibouti et le Yémen en quête de travail dans le Golfe.
La Covid-19 a contraint de nombreuses personnes à faire demi-tour en raison de la fermeture généralisée des frontières qui ont réduit l’accès aux États du Golfe. Des voyages similaires entre le Yémen et Djibouti sont entrepris à bord de navires non navigables par des migrants désespérés de rentrer chez eux presque quotidiennement.
Malgré les dangers, le nombre de migrants arrivant à Djibouti continue d’augmenter. En mars, plus de 2.343 migrants sont arrivés du Yémen, contre 1.900 en février. La plupart essayaient de rentrer chez eux en Ethiopie et en Somalie. Le mois dernier, lors d’un incident similaire cette fois en route vers le Yémen, des passeurs ont jeté 80 personnes par-dessus bord après s’être plaints que le bateau était surpeuplé et coulait. Au moins 20 se sont noyés, selon les survivants.
« L’Oim travaille avec les autorités djiboutiennes, la communauté humanitaire et les donateurs pour mettre fin à ces souffrances et sauver des vies », a déclaré Stephanie Daviot, cheffe de mission de l’Oim à Djibouti.
