L’ensemble des troupes américaines et de l’OTAN ont quitté la base aérienne de Bagram, a annoncé vendredi 2 juillet un responsable de la Défense américaine, affirmant que le retrait de la totalité des forces étrangères présentes en Afghanistan est imminent. La base a été officiellement restituée aux forces gouvernementale ce vendredi 2 juillet.
« Toutes les forces de la coalition ont quitté Bagram », a déclaré ce responsable, sous couvert d’anonymat. La base, située à 50 kilomètres au nord de Kaboul a été officiellement restituée à l’armée afghane ce 2 juillet. Ni le retrait, ni la restitution n’ont pour le moment fait l’objet d’un commentaire officiel du département d’État américain. A contrario, selon le porte-parole des talibans Zabihullah Mujahid qui s’est exprimé à l’AFP, les talibans « se réjouissent et soutiennent » ce départ. Avant d’ajouter : « Leur retrait complet permettra aux Afghans de décider eux-mêmes de leur avenir. »
Le départ de la base aérienne de Bagram est une étape majeure du retrait des troupes américaines d’Afghanistan. Une étape hautement symbolique. La base de Bagram qui est un immense complexe entouré de murs anti-explosion, surmontés de barbelés, était la plus grande base gérée par les américains en Afghanistan.
C’est donc la fin d’une présence militaire américaine dans un endroit stratégique. Bagram a servi de point de départ pour les frappes militaires contre les talibans et d’autres groupes islamistes depuis les débuts de l’intervention en Afghanistan il y a près de 20 ans.
Une intervention décidée après les attentats contre les tours du World Trade Center à New York et contre le Pentagone, le 11 septembre 2001. Le 20e anniversaire de cet événement a d’ailleurs été choisi comme date butoir par Joe Biden pour le retrait américain d’Afghanistan. L’opération militaire avait certes permis de renverser le régime taliban, mais ces derniers n’ont jamais cessé de combattre les troupes américaines et leurs alliés.
Dans les villages voisins, la population affiche une certaine amertume au départ des forces américaines. 20 après leur intervention en Afghanistan, le pays semble au bord du chaos. Depuis début mai, les talibans ont mené plusieurs offensives importantes à l’intérieur du pays. Selon notre correspondante à kaboul, Sonia Ghezali, ils, progressent en effet à une vitesse folle. Ils tentent depuis quelques jours de faire tomber certaines capitales provinciales. Les insurgés qui se sont déjà emparés des postes-frontières avec le Tadjikistan, pourraient sous peu, selon certaines sources, prendre le contrôle de la frontière avec l’Ouzbekistan. Les talibans montrent qu’ils ont clairement l’avantage sur les forces de sécurité afghanes qui seront seules dans moins de trois mois.
