Le procès de l’opposant Joël Aïvo, candidat recalé à l’élection présidentielle du 11 avril dernier, s’est ouvert ce jeudi 15 juillet à Porto-Novo. Il avait été arrêté au lendemain du scrutin, en pleine rue, et la Cour de répression des infractions économiques et du terrorisme (Criet) le poursuit pour « atteinte à la sûreté de l’État et blanchiment d’argent ».
Plusieurs avocats du barreau béninois et de l’étranger sont mobilisés pour défendre l’universitaire, considéré en Afrique comme un constitutionnaliste de très grande réputation. Cette figure majeure de la jeune génération d’acteurs politiques béninois nie totalement ce qui lui est reproché. Trois mois jour pour jour après son arrestation spectaculaire, le 15 avril dernier, quatre jours après l’élection présidentielle, le professeur Joël Aïvo est en effet jugé pour « atteinte à la sûreté de l’Etat et blanchiment ».
Avec lui, un militaire à la retraite, un sous-officier encore en service, et celui qui gère les finances de son mouvement politique, Dynamique Aïvo. Selon nos informations, les avocats n’ont pas obtenu copie du dossier mais ils ont été autorisés à le consulter.
Sur la qualification « d’atteinte à la sureté », les fuites ne permettent pas de savoir grand-chose avant l’audience. En revanche, « le blanchiment » dont il est accusé serait en rapport avec sa caution de candidat à l’élection présidentielle pour laquelle il a été disqualifié.
L’universitaire, qui avant et pendant l’élection a sévèrement critiqué la gouvernance Talon et ses réformes politiques, est défendu par un collège d’avocats du barreau béninois et d’ailleurs. Parmi eux le vétéran Robert Dossou ou encore le teigneux Elvis Dide.
Mi-juin, Joël Aïvo a été testé positif au Covid-19. Récemment encore, il a répété à ses conseils qu’il n’avait rien à voir avec ses faits et espère sortir de détention.
