Les Lakers voient les barrages qualificatifs pour les play-offs s’éloigner de plus en plus, après leur sixième défaite de rang concédée contre Denver, dimanche en NBA, où Luka Doncic a volé la vedette à Giannis Antetokounmpo lors du succès de Dallas à Milwaukee.

L. A L.A. a longtemps tenu tête aux Nuggets (129-118) avant de craquer dans le money-time. Car au final, l’absence de LeBron James, tenu de reposer sa cheville gauche douloureuse pour la 4e fois en six matches, a inévitablement pesé. Il avait marqué 38 points lors de la défaite contre la Nouvelle-Orléans vendredi… Pour son deuxième match d’affilée, après un mois et demi sans jouer, Anthony Davis a pourtant été performant (28 pts, 9 rbds, 8 passes, 3 contres). Et Russell Westbrook, souvent décrié pour ses mauvais choix cette saison, a joué juste et bien (27 pts, à 11/15 aux tirs, 10 rbds).

Mais ils sont tombés sur Nikola Jokic. Le MVP en titre, péchant certes par trop de balles perdues (7) a été leur bourreau (38 pts, 18 rbds, 6 passes). Will Barton, très adroit derrière l’arc (6/8) a aussi contribué (25 pts).

Si les Nuggets confortent leur 5e place à l’Ouest, les Lakers restent engoncés à la 11e, toujours devancés par San Antonio (10e), qui a battu Portland (113-92). Les Spurs possèdent deux victoires d’avance, avec quatre matches à jouer pour chacune des deux équipes d’ici la fin de la saison régulière.

Les calculs sont déjà lancés, mais l’entraîneur californien Frank Vogel assure ne pas « être préoccupé par les maths ». « Je me préoccupe du prochain match. Je tire les leçons de cette défaite pour la prochaine rencontre, en espérant obtenir une victoire contre Phoenix. »

Luka brille chez Giannis 

Soit. Mais un revers dès mardi contre les Suns, leaders du championnat qui ont concédé une défaite surprise à Oklahoma City (117-96), pourrait bien alors mathématiquement acter l’élimination du champion 2020 de la course aux play-offs et sonner la fin d’une saison cauchemar.

Les Celtics n’ont fait qu’une bouchée des Wizards (144-102) au TD Garden. Jaylen Brown a été le meilleur marqueur de son équipe (32 pts), bien épaulé par Jayson Tatum (22 pts).

Devant eux, le leader Miami a un peu plus renforcé ses chances de finir tête de série N.1 aux play-offs, c’est à dire avec l’avantage du parquet, à la faveur de sa victoire à Toronto (114-109).

Sans Jimmy Butler (orteil), le Heat a pu compter sur Max Strus (23 pts), Victor Oladipo (21 pts) et Tyler Herro (18 pts, 9 passes, 8 rbds).

Au 4e rang, avec le même bilan que les Bucks (48-30) se trouve Philadelphie, vainqueur (112-108) d’un match serré à Cleveland (7e).
