Les autorités camerounaises annoncent avoir arrêté un homme soupçonné d’avoir participé au massacre de Kumba. Le 24 octobre dernier, des hommes armés avaient pris d’assaut une école privée dans cette région anglophone du Sud-ouest du pays, tuant 7 enfants et en blessant au moins 13 autres.
Le suspect, Ngwa Neba alias commandant Zabbra, 24 ans, a été arrêté ce mardi alors qu’il tentait de voler une personne âgée. Ce sont les cris de témoins de la scène qui ont attiré l’attention des forces de l’ordre.
Interrogé par la police, Neba Ngwa aurait avoué être un combattant séparatiste et appartenir à un gang de combattants d’Ambazonie basé à proximité du lycée gouvernemental bilingue de Kosala-Kumba.
Les combats entre les forces camerounaises et les rebelles séparatistes dans les régions anglophones du nord-ouest et du sud-ouest du Cameroun ont déjà fait des milliers de morts.
La responsabilité de l’attaque de Kumba n’a pas été revendiquée, mais le gouvernement camerounais a accusé les séparatistes armés. Le vice-président du « Ambazonia Interim Government », l’un des principaux groupes séparatistes, a, lui, déclaré le 25 octobre que des soldats camerounais avaient perpétré l’attaque.
Les attaques contre les écoles, les élèves et le personnel enseignant dans les régions anglophones ont eu des conséquences dévastatrices sur l’éducation. Selon les Nations unies, 81 % des enfants n’étaient pas scolarisés dans les régions du Nord-ouest et du Sud-ouest pendant l’année scolaire 2019-2020.
L’attaque de Kumba a provoqué un tollé au niveau national et international.
Les Nations unies, l’Union africaine, les États-Unis, le Royaume-Uni, la France, le Canada et le pape François ont tous condamné les meurtres
