Au début du mois de mars, des cas de poliomyélite ont été signalés dans la région de Diourbel, après une longue accalmie. Au nombre de quatre cas, selon le coordinateur du Programme élargi de vaccination, Dr Ousseynou Badiane, la réapparition de cette maladie virale qui touche plutôt les enfants, et plus particulièrement ceux de moins de 5 ans s’explique par « la porosité des frontières et la faiblesse des couvertures vaccinales de la sous région ».
D’ailleurs, révèle Dr Badiane, dans cet entretien avec PressAfrik, « ces cas nous ont été importés ». Aussi, souligne-t-il, en 2017, le Sénégal a connu des ruptures de vaccin contre la Poliomyélite. De ce faite, beaucoup d’enfants depuis lors n’ont pu être vaccinés. Explications !
4 cas de Poliomyélite détectés à Diourbel
« Effectivement, dans le cadre de la surveillance épidémiologique, nous avons eu à détecter des cas de poliomyélite qui sont au nombre de quatre. Et ces cas reviennent après une longue période d’accalmie. C’est au niveau de la région de Diourbel, notamment dans le district de Touba (3) et un (1) dans le district de Bambey »
La porosité de nos frontières en cause
« Ce qu’on peut dire est que ce virus circule quand même depuis quelques années au niveau de la sous-région et le Sénégal était relativement épargné. Mais on s’attendait un peu à ça, du fait de la porosité des frontières et de la faiblesse des couvertures vaccinales dans ces pays qui nous entourent. C’est ce qui est arrivé. Pour vous dire que ces cas nous sont venus des pays voisins. Et quand le virus est entré au Sénégal, il a trouvé des enfants qui étaient incomplètement vaccinés et ses enfants ont développé cette maladie.
Le fait de nous occuper de la covid_19 ne doit pas nous empêcher d’être aussi vigilants par rapport à toutes ces maladies à prévention vaccinale.
« C’est vrai que nous sommes dans un contexte de pandémie à Covid_19, mais la réalité des choses est que cette pandémie n’empêche pas aussi aux autres maladies de suivre leur cours. Si on se focalise sur la pandémie et qu’on néglige les moyens de prévention, les autres maladies vont faire une résurgence et c’est le cas de la maladie de la Fièvre jaune qui était apparue dans le sud du pays et c’est le cas actuellement de la Poliomyélite et ça peut être également le cas de la Rougeole et d’autres maladies.
Donc au lieu d’avoir peur, sensibilisons les populations pour qu’ils respectent le calendrier vaccinal de leurs enfants. Parce que, comme on a l’habitude de dire, ces maladies pour lesquelles on protège les enfants dans le programme élargi de vaccination sont plus meurtrières que la covid_19 chez les enfants. Le fait de nous occuper de la covid_19 ne doit pas nous empêcher d’être aussi vigilants par rapport à toutes ces maladies à prévention vaccinale »
Le Sénégal garde son statut de Pays libéré de la Polio
Le Sénégal garde toujours son statut de pays libéré de poliovirus sauvage. Donc nous sommes toujours dans liste. C’est pas parce qu’on peine à éradiquer la polio. Mais l’éradication de la polio, vous savez, ça sera une éradication mondiale. Même si les pays, individuellement éradiquent, tant qu’il y a une circulation de polio quelque part, personne n’est à l’abris. Comme je l’ai dit ce virus circulait dans la sous-région depuis quelques années. Et il est entré au Sénégal par une importation des pays voisins. Maintenant, si la riposte est efficace, on pourra stopper cette importation avant que ça ne se propage dans tout le pays. Et Donc, le Sénégal ne perd pas pour le moment son statut de pays libéré.
Il y a eu des ruptures de vaccins contre la Polio en 2017 et beaucoup d’enfants n’ont pu être vaccinés
Le vaccin qui protège contre ce type de polio, c’est actuellement, le Vaccin Polio Inactivé qui est administré par la voie injectable introduit dans le programme en 2016. Et en 2017, il y avait eu quand même des ruptures de vaccins qui ont fait que les enfants n’ont pas pu recevoir de dose. Depuis lors, chaque année, il y a des enfants qui échappent au programme de vaccination. Mais normalement chaque année, ce sont environ 500.000 enfants à 600.000 enfants que reçoivent ce Vaccin Polio Inactivé.
Un recensement de tous les enfants qui ont raté la vaccination en cours
Maintenant, ce qu’on est en train de faire c’est le recensement de tous les enfants qui ont raté la vaccination de les remettre à jour à Diourbel. Mais dès qu’on finira à Diourbel cette activité sera élargie au niveau national.
