Décès De Kenneth Kaunda, Père De L’Indépendance Zambienne

L’ancien président de la Zambie, Kenneth Kaunda, hospitalisé en début de semaine, n’est plus.

Âgé de 97 ans,le père de l’indépendance de la Zambie était hospitalisé depuis lundi au Centre médical Maina Soko pour une pneumonie, avait déclaré à l’AFP son assistant Rodrick Ngolo. « Le problème de la pneumonie revient régulièrement (chez l’ex-président) et chaque fois que vous entendez qu’il est à l’hôpital, c’est à cause d’une pneumonie », avait-il affirmé, ajoutant que l’état de santé de l’ex-président s’était « amélioré » depuis lundi.

Surnommé « le Gandhi africain » pour son militantisme non violent, Kenneth Kaunda avait conduit l’ancienne Rhodésie du Nord, protectorat britannique, à l’indépendance sans effusion de sang en octobre 1964. Se réclamant du socialisme et proche de Moscou, il a dirigé le pays pendant 27 ans, en grande partie sous le régime d’un parti unique, dont la mauvaise gestion a provoqué une grave crise économique et sociale.

Après de violentes émeutes, il avait accepté des élections libres en 1991 et fut battu. Lorsqu’il était au pouvoir, il a accueilli de nombreux mouvements luttant pour l’indépendance ou l’égalité des noirs dans d’autres pays de la région, dont le parti sud-africain du Congrès national africain (ANC).

Egalement surnommé « KK », il était le chef du principal parti nationaliste, le parti de centre-gauche UNIP. Il est aussi devenu un militant pour la lutte contre le sida, lorsqu’il avait annoncé publiquement que l’un de ses fils était mort de la maladie
