Agé de 84 ans, il était le petit-fils d’Abdel Rahman al-Mahdi, fondateur du parti Umma, et l’arrière-petit-fils de Mohammad Ahmad, qui avait dirigé la révolte de 1881 à 1885 contre la domination anglo-égyptienne.
Sadek al-Mahdi avait été Premier ministre du Soudan à deux reprises: en 1966-1967, puis une seconde fois entre 1986 et le 30 juin 1989. Cette seconde fois, il a été élu par le Parlement.
Omar el-Béchir et 27 autres accusés sont actuellement jugés pour ce coup d’Etat. L’ex-autocrate risque la peine de mort.
