Un violent incendie a ravagé mardi matin la prison centrale de la capitale burundaise Gitega, tuant 38 personnes et en blessant 69 autres, selon un bilan officiel communiqué par le vice-président Prosper Bazombanza.
Plusieurs témoins ont indiqué à l’AFP que le feu avait totalement calciné certaines parties de cette prison surpeuplée, qui abritait 1.539 détenus (pour 400 places) fin novembre, selon les chiffres de l’administration pénitentiaire.
Selon ces témoins, qui ont décrit d' »immenses flammes », le feu s’est déclaré vers 04H00 (02H00 GMT), surprenant les détenus dans leur sommeil.
« Nous nous sommes mis à crier que nous allions être brûlés vifs lorsque nous avons vu les flammes qui montaient très haut, mais les policiers ont refusé d’ouvrir les portes de notre quartier en disant ce sont les ordres que nous avons reçus », a raconté à l’AFP un détenu, joint par téléphone.
« Je ne sais pas comment j’en ai réchappé, mais il y a des prisonniers qui ont été brûlés totalement », a-t-il affirmé.
En fin de matinée, le vice-président Prosper Bazombanza et quatre ministres (Intérieur et Sécurité publique, Justice, Santé, Solidarité) se sont rendus sur place, tandis que la presse avait été tenue à l’écart du site par un important déploiement de militaires et policiers.
